Abstract
Arkadaş'a (Memduh Ün, 1958) festivalde ödül verilmemesi
Film festivals and awards in Turkey have caused controversy from the very beginning to the present. The First Turkish Film Festival, organized by the Journalists' Association in 1959, caused a debate between filmmakers and critics because it did not give the Best Film award. Halit Refiğ describes this debate, after many years, as a milestone of the antagonism between filmmakers and critics, which constitutes one of the main axes of his narrative about Turkish cinema. According to Refiğ, the fact that Üç Arkadaş (Memduh Ün, 1958) was not awarded at the festival, which everyone considers the best film of the year, is the first solid example of a negative attitude towards Turkish cinema. Refiğ blames literary intellectuals beyond the critics in the field of cinema. However, the scandal created by the award decisions at the festival is billed to the film critics. Nijat Özön, who became a kind of spokesperson for the critics in the 1960s, admits that the critics made mistakes in the debate. He says that the discussion led to a break in the view towards critics in the field of cinema. He tells that after this incident, the goodwill of the critics began to be doubted and the practice of cinema criticism entered a phase of stagnation contrary to the vitality it has experienced in the last few years. In this study, in the context of the events and discussions that took place around the First Turkish Film Festival, I will try to analyze the different positions, status, and value judgments, especially the groupings of filmmakers and critics, and thus to reveal the relationship network of Yeşilçam cinema.
